PacifiCan Invests in Future of BC with Support for Indigenous, Women, and Youth Entrepreneurs

Penticton and Gabriola Island, British Columbia - February 10, 2023 - PacifiCan, Canada's Pacific Economic Development Agency, is proud to announce a new investment of $148,000 in British Columbia. This funding, through PacifiCan's Regional Innovation Ecosystems Program, will support two initiatives aimed at promoting economic growth and increasing economic participation by underrepresented groups.

The Gabriola Island Recycling Organization will receive $98,000 to launch a textile repurposing project for Indigenous, women, and youth entrepreneurs. The funding will aid in the purchase of a textile shredder, the development of repurposed textile products, and the creation of a makerspace for self-employed entrepreneurs. This investment is expected to create eight jobs and assist 30 local small businesses.

The British Columbia Economic Development Association will receive $50,000 to create economic development training materials and webinars aimed at helping community groups and local governments support underrepresented groups, including Indigenous peoples, women, and youth, in their economic recovery from the impacts of COVID-19.

According to The Honourable Harjit S. Sajjan, Minister of International Development and Minister responsible for PacifiCan, "Everyone should have the same opportunity to start, grow, or achieve business success. Today's investments support the efforts of two dedicated organizations who are advancing an inclusive economy in B.C. The Government of Canada will continue to help unlock the potential of all British Columbians, particularly those facing the greatest barriers, leading to greater prosperity for all."

PacifiCan's Regional Innovation Ecosystem Program aims to grow and nurture priority sectors across British Columbia, building an inclusive innovation ecosystem that allows those sectors to innovate and compete globally. PacifiCan takes an inclusive approach to delivering programs and supporting economic growth and prosperity, always considering the potential impacts on underrepresented groups in its project proposals.
