Harvest Manitoba is the fourth largest food charity of its kind in Canada currently supporting the food-security needs for over 80,000 people each month. We are seeking a Manager of Indigenous Initiatives who will work in the community and with our Harvest team. Reporting to the Director of Network, Advocacy and Education, the manager’s primary objective is to lead and cultivate the development of programs and partnerships that will help Harvest better support the food security needs of indigenous people as well as assist Harvest on its own journey in support of reconciliation.

POSITION GOAL: The Manager of Indigenous Initiatives is a new position that has been created to join the Harvest Manitoba team. Harvest Manitoba serves over 33,000 people every month through our hamper program and another 50,000 people through our network of community agencies all around the province. Over 36% of Harvest clients are self-declared as Indigenous. This position will seek to understand the unique food security needs of Indigenous people and will build partnerships and initiatives that will increase access to nutritious food and allow Harvest to provide improved programs and supports.

REPORTS TO: Director of Network, Advocacy & Education

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Develop and cultivate new and expanded relationships with organizations that support the food needs of Indigenous Manitobans. This position will require the successful applicant to be a public face of Harvest Manitoba with many community organizations.

 

· Maintain and strengthen Harvest Manitoba’s existing relationships with indigenous-led organizations, First Nations and agencies that are a part of our existing Community Food Network.

· Develop and cultivate relationships with Indigenous food producers, harvesters, and individuals & organizations who support and share knowledge about traditional foods and nutrition.

· Develop & lead programming that meets the specific food needs of First Nations and Northern Communities including planning and delivery of food support, grants, and other activities.

· Manage projects, budgets and staff as required to ensure the successful implementation of new programs and projects.

· Working with other team members at Harvest to develop and support Indigenous-focused research, policy, and advocacy activities on behalf of Harvest.

· Maintain a current database of indigenous-led organizations, First Nations and other agencies and determine relevant communications.

· Support and guide Harvest staff, leadership, and our board of directors through a journey of reconciliation by bringing education and resources to support traditional knowledge within the organization.

· Monitor news and events relevant to the position and duties and provide advice to Harvest Leadership team as required.

· As a member of the Harvest Manitoba CREW, support the team however needed to ensure operational needs are being met.

 

ABOUT YOU:

· A strong belief in the dignity of all human beings and a positive and caring approach

 

· Applicant’s must present official documentation confirming they are fully immunized against COVID-19 along with identification to validate the person’s identity as matching the vaccination record provided.

· Post-Secondary education in a relevant social science, humanities of health discipline is preferred.

· Experience in working in a collaborative team environment to develop and manage projects is a must.

· Existing knowledge of and relationships with Manitoba Indigenous-led organizations and First Nations a major asset.

· Knowledge of food banking, food security and poverty issues an asset.

· Knowledge of one or more Indigenous languages spoken is Manitoba is an asset.

· Strong working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel, is required

· A proven ability to utilize online platforms to research and uncover a variety of information

· Persuasive communication skills, both written and verbal are essential

· A strong team focus and interest in supporting the organization and its Crew

· Ability to pass a criminal background check

· Valid driver’s license

Evening and weekend shifts will be required as business levels dictate.
