Environmental Scientist Specialist
Location: Brantford
The Senior Environmental Scientist is responsible for leading the coordination of the solid waste program and supporting the environment team in providing a wide range of environmental advisory services to our First Nation clients to build technical capacity and maintain a sustainable environment network.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coordinate the Solid Waste Program within the Environment Unit including planning and coordination of client training, workshops, and focus groups along with the preparation of communication materials
- Assist with the provision of advisory services including technical, training, and policy support to program support staff at Tribal Councils, Large First Nations, and unaffiliated First Nations, in the following key areas:
- Solid waste management
- Solid waste diversion including household hazardous waste
- Landfill and Transfer Station Operations & Maintenance
- Environmental legislation and regulation
- Plan and coordinate the Ontario First Nations Regional Solid Waste Committee including liaison with Tribal Councils, First Nations and Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) partners
- Communicates effectively to provide support to various First Nations and government environment/solid waste committees and initiatives when required
- Assist with the preparation of funding applications, requests for proposals, and project reports to support client and organization projects
- Provide First Nation communities with technical assistance to build the skills and expertise required to manage their environmental issues appropriately, through training and the provision of advisory services as necessary
- Monitor, analyze, and interpret federal and provincial legislation, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to environmental matters
- Participate in regional, provincial and national environmental initiatives that advance the interests of First Nations in Ontario
- Plans, forecasts, and monitors work plans and monthly progress reports
- Prepare communications material for clients and organizations related to solid waste and environment programs and services
- Maintain relationships and partnerships with the various communities, stakeholders, and federal and provincial agencies
- Understands the procedures and protocols in dealing with First Nation communities, government bureaucracies, and agencies
- Assist with planning, coordinating, and facilitating formal training sessions, presentations, and workshops including Landfill and Transfer Stations Operations and Maintenance; Waste Diversion; MTSAs; and others as directed
- Review and comment on Solid Waste Management Plans, Landfill Assessment Reports, Waste Diversion Policies, and Technical Designs for landfill closure and/or transfer stations.
- Coordinate and implement infrastructure projects relating to solid waste management and diversion programs at First Nation landfill sites
- Understanding of contaminated sites, site assessments, and remediation projects, including interpretation of landfill monitoring results
- Assist with event-related activities as requested
- Maintain records and evaluations for First Nation clients
- Review and maintain a project schedule and project budget
- Manage own travel budget
- Report financial activities to the Director of Operations
EXPERIENCE:
- Post-Secondary Degree in Environmental Studies, Science, or Planning
- Must possess excellent project management skills
- 5-7 years of related experience
- Must maintain proper certification and membership through recognized training authorities
- Acquire ongoing education to meet organizations minimal skill requirements
- Comprehensive understanding of the Drinking Water Quality Management Standards
- Excellent knowledge of environmental compliance and health and safety requirements
- Solid knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (Ontario), and other applicable legislation.
- Previous experience participating in audits and inspections for internal audits, with the ability to respond to findings and make recommendations to assigned facilities.
- Excellent written skills in English with the capability to prepare written technical letters, reports, and procedures.
- Our successful candidate will have intermediate to advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
- Valid Class G Ontario driver’s license and a personal vehicle is a MUST
- Must be available outside of regular working hours for emergencies
- Must be able to pass a Criminal Record Check
- Must be legally able to work in Canada
- Must be willing to travel approximately 25% of the time
- Must be local or willing to relocate to Brantford, Ontario
