The role:
- Acts as a key strategic resource to respective client areas and provides expert HR guidance and advice.
- Analyses trends and metrics in partnership with HR Services group.
- Manages and resolves complex employee relations issues.
- Provides day-to-day performance management guidance to front-line management.
- Works with client groups on job classification matters.
- Provides HR policy guidance and interpretation of collective agreement(s).
- Develops employment terms for new hires, promotions, secondments, transfers, etc.
- Provides guidance and input on business unit restructures, workforce planning, and succession planning.
- Identifies training needs for business units and individual leadership development needs.
- Participate in delivery and monitoring success of training programs.
- Represents the university in meetings with the employee and union representatives.
- Working closely with various faculties and departments across campus will provide guidance and support on Indigenous recruitment Initiatives ensuring better understanding of their indigenous recruitment needs and the promotion of inclusive hiring practices.
- Partner with Career Services, Indigenous Student Centre, Indigenous Business Education Partners, Enrolment Services, and Indigenous Student recruitment to market UM Career opportunities to Indigenous candidates.
- Helps to develop and coordinate outreach strategy to broader Indigenous community to ensure they are aware of our employment opportunities.
- Coordinate and prompt the Indigenous Summer Student Internship Program on campus.
- Represents HR on internal committees.
- Leads the internal review of all HR policies, procedures and processes to ensure they are in alignment with indigenous values and culture and support equity and inclusion for Indigenous applicants and employees.
- Provides on-going training to HR employees to promote greater understanding values and culture and their role in supporting equity and inclusion for Indigenous applicants and employees.
- Provides strategies and assistance to all administrators with the discipline process.
- Advises and supports client groups engaged in grievances.
- Provides support and advice regarding job profile development process.
- In consultation with Classification Specialist, classify new and existing positions, and chair classification reviews as needed.
- In consultation with Staff Relations, participates in strategy and proposes amendments to collective agreement language.
- Serves as a member of the management team for the purposes of collective bargaining.
- Reviews proposed policies with respect to ramifications on staff and labour relations.
- Liaises with, provides advice, and collaborates with Staff Relations, Disability Case Coordinator, Occupational Health and Safety, Human Rights and Equity Advisor, Diversity Consultant, and Staff Benefits regarding reasonable accommodations, rehabilitation and return to work plans.
- Keeps updated on current HR trends/issues/developments relating to strategic HR initiatives, industry best practices, and employment legislation through attendance at workshops, seminars, webinars, etc.
- Undertakes special projects as assigned by Director, HR Services.
- Participates on committees as required.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
The qualifications and experience we’re looking for:

- Undergraduate degree with courses in human resources or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A CPHR designation is preferred.
- his position requires and indigenous candidate with strong connections to the Indigenous community.
- A minimum of 8-10 years of directly related HR generalist experience is required.
- Experience working in a complex unionized environment preferred.
- Demonstrated working knowledge of multiple HR disciplines including compensation practices, organizational diagnosis, employee and union relations, diversity, performance management and respective employment laws.
- Experience with job classification systems desired, experience with Hay System an asset.
- Strong interpersonal and negotiation skills.
- Demonstrated integrity and reliability.
- Excellent client management and business literacy skills.

- Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills.
- Must be able to develop strong, trusting relationships in order to gain support and achieve results.
